The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was established in 1994 by the University Grants Commission(UGC) with the main intention of conducting accreditation and approvals to universities and colleges for higher education in India and also to ensure students get quality education with global standards from the universities and colleges nationwide.
To ensure quality education, NAAC has developed some set of rules and regulations through which a university or college can investigate if they fall under the guidelines or if they can apply to NAAC for accreditation. The autonomous body of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council also assists universities and colleges in getting grants in aid from both central and state governments. 


How does NAAC grade Indian universities?
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) observes a comprehensive investigation to evaluate universities and colleges in India. NAAC awards Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions such as A, A+, and A++ based on a thorough examination of various parameters. Below mention are some key criteria and factors considered by NAAC in assigning grades to universities:
Structure and Delivery:  NAAC evaluates the design structure of the curriculum and delivery of the curriculum by ensuring its relevance if it aligns with modern trends in the market.

  • Quality of Education: Assessment of the faculty’s competence, teaching methodologies, and their ability to engage students effectively.
  • Student Performance and Progress: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council analyzes students’ achievements, examination results, and overall progress during the educational journey.
  • Research Activities: Evaluation of the quantity and quality of research output, including publications, patents, and funded projects.
  • Infrastructure and Learning Resources: NAAC will assess the infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other amenities that facilitate an optimal learning environment.

Procedure to get NAAC Accreditation

  • Universities or colleges seeking NAAC Accreditation should perform self-assessment and readiness evaluation by forming an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
  • Before application applicants should ensure the collection of relevant data and documentation.
  • The concerned university or college should submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to NAAC as a process of application.
  • After the successful application submission, there will be an on-site evaluation of the concerned university/ institution by a peer-appointed team by NAAC.
  • The NAAC Accreditation process includes various aspects of assessment such as interviews and documentation verification.
  • The concerned universities should prepare a Self-Study Report (SSR). The SSR is based on the quantitative and qualitative metrics which will be a supporting document to the NAAC’s peer team.
  • The concerns and suggestions to the particular institution will be demonstrated by NAAC’s appointed team in the Institutional Response (IR).
  • After the successful investigation, the accreditation decision and grade (A, A+, A++, etc.) to the institution will be delivered to the concerned university.
