The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes competency-based learning and global best practices, includes the adoption of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) in India.
The idea will initially be rolled out in 100 partner schools across the country.
Over the next three years, 100 partner schools in India will introduce the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), a senior secondary curriculum designed by the Western Australian government. Singapore, China, Japan, and Malaysia are some of the countries that already have the global curriculum in place.
The senior secondary curriculum of the Western Australian government's WACE has been officially granted equivalency by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). This move makes WACE the first of the Indian government-supported foreign school boards to be implemented formally in the country.
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), the government organisation responsible for monitoring WACE, will provide each student with a unique ID number, while all certificates will be issued forthwith by the Government of Western Australia, as per a press release.
Students passing WACE in India will now be capable of getting into Indian colleges based on Class 12 equivalency, following AIU's accreditation.
Rather than emphasising rote memorisation, the curriculum seeks to encourage competency-based and inquiry-driven learning. It focuses on the cultivation of critical thinking, creativity, and practical application of knowledge.
International Curriculum, Accredited Qualifications, and Eligibility
The goals of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 are also enshrined in WACE, especially the support of formative and comprehensive evaluation. Moderated grading, school-based assessments, and projects shall be utilised to assess students instead of mere standard exams.
One of the key features is that students studying in WACE-affiliated schools will also receive the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), a highly regarded university entry score that universities across Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia accept.
The WACE curriculum provides an integrated K–12 educational course from early childhood education through senior high school.
In accordance with India's vision for modern, inclusive education, this introduction is expected to bring international learning standards to Indian classrooms, opening opportunities for foreign study.
Some of the global boards that currently provide curricula and assessments in India include the French Baccalaureate (FB), Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), and International Baccalaureate (IB).
