What is University Grant Commission (UGC)?
UGC stands for University Grants Commission or Committee, India. The commission is an initiative of the Indian Government under the UGC Act of 1956. History of UGC
The University Grants Commission aka UGC was established in 1945 in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi by the then central government of India. The main motive behind this commission was primarily to manage only three central universities of Delhi, Prayagraj, and Banaras. Gradually in 1947, the responsibilities were extended on the commission to encompass all indian universities.
In 1952, the Central government of India decided to grant authority to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to manage the allocation of grants-in-aid to central and other universities from public funds. On 28 December 1953, under the guidance of the Late Shri Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the then Minister of Education, Government of India, the commission was officially inaugurated.
While the central government possessed authority over higher and professional education in 1950, it garnered additional powers in 1976 following the adoption of the 42nd Amendment. Formally instituted in November 1956 through an Act of Parliament, the UGC operates as a statutory body of the Indian government, tasked with coordinating, determining, and maintaining standards in higher education.

Presently, it is the responsibility of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to evaluate and accredit higher education institutions (HEIs) in India, and this autonomous body was founded by UGC.
